This resource has a powerpoint and planning grid for a sequence of writing lessons to write instructions on making a lighthouse keeper sandwich. This includes colourful semantic adaptations, printable worksheets on slides and visual aids. I have include the retrieval that I have used for my class but this is all able to be changed.

Each group has a superhero board game ( grey group have 3 due to the amount of red words) for the children to enjoy and practice their red words. The sheets are A3 and can be printed on paper or card. I would suggest laminating them. Also comes with instructions but you can choose how you play it.

Barrier games are a fun way to develop children’s speaking and listening skills. They can also be used to explore positional language. They are great to use as a separate activity, small group work, individual, whole class or as part of a reading fluency intervention. The four themes are space, farm, under the sea and nature. This pack contains: 4 red group red word barrier games 4 green group red word barrier games 4 purple group red word barrier games 4 pink group red word barrier games 4 orange group red word barrier games 4 yellow group red word barrier games 4 blue group red word barrier games 7 grey group red word barrier games (due to the amount of red words and their length) Instructions: These barrier games are designed for individual players. Each player has a phonics word sheet. Players listen to instructions given by the teacher and then colour in the correct word. Teachers could give clear instructions such as ‘colour in the word no’ or their instructions could be extended to ‘colour the word “the” in purple’. Two instructions may be given to challenge, for example 'colour in the words “no” and “into”".

As we noticed a lack of assessment by RWI to assess the childrens ability to read red words we have created a tool to do so. This resource contains an excel spreadsheet, split into the groups and the red words within those. E.g a table for red group with space to put the children’s names down one side and the red words for that group across the top. This resource also contains a paper copy of this, stating at the top what the tool is used for. After each paper copy, there are red word cards that can be printed, copied and cut up to send home with the children to practice the red words for their group. I hope people find this useful!

This resource contains 6 mixed red word roll and read activities per colour group of RWI. This can be used as an activity during continuous provision, interventions or lesson time. I have ensured that each board has the red words in different places, so the children have to focus on learning the words rather then where the words are on the boards. Each roll and read board is co-ordinated to the colour group it is made for and has a mixture of all the red words the children will read in the corresponding group books.
